Karns sits in the Beaver Creek valley between Beaver Ridge and Copper Ridge, with Oak Ridge Highway (TN-62) as its main road. Until the 1950s the community went by Beaver Ridge or Byington; residents then voted to adopt the name of the high school, which honors Thomas Conner Karns, Knox County’s first superintendent of public instruction. The first Karns High School was built in 1913, and a new building followed in 1938.
